THE BASICS Modules


Module 1: What is mental health

Get a clear understanding of how to understand your mental health and clear common misconceptions. You will also learn to recognize signs and monitor where you are on the mental health continuum. This will empower you to know how to care for your mental health, wherever you on the continuum, in a way that reduces difficulties and bolsters your wellbeing and ability to show up fully in your life.

Module 2: Self-awareness

Develop a consistent practice for tuning in to yourself. This provides regular updating needs assessment. It gives you the information you need to make in-the-moment shifts, and engage in on-going strategic planning for your well-being and goals. Without this practice, you’re working with vague or out-of-date information on what you need to feel your best and bring the best ‘you’ to the work that matters to you.

Module 3: Self-care

Once you’ve learned to do consistent check-ins/needs assessments, you’ll work on strategic planning and action--what practical steps do you need to take from day-to-day to feel and function at your best? This isn’t your average talk about self-care. We’re not just talking about facials and bubble baths. You will develop a specific, practical and personalized plan based on principles that get results!

Module 4: Self-talk

To feel your best and coach yourself towards maximum effectiveness, you can’t just talk to yourself any-old-kind-of-way. This module will help you (1) become aware of how you currently talk to yourself and it’s impact; and (2) how to pivot and become fluent in more effective self-coaching language.

Module 5: Social Support/Squad

Everything in our curriculum is based on a belief the wellbeing and achievement are collective endeavors. Our psychological health, success and fulfillment are largely based on the health of our close relationships. You will learn how to assess the health or your relationships and begin to build the squad you need to support the life you want to live.

Module 6: Managing Moments of Crisis

Learn our Stop, Breath & Assess model for coping with high distress and mental health crisis. This process will equip you to (1) identify signs of high distress and crisis; (2) implement strategies to pause, regulate distress,and evaluate both the situation, and what you need;  (3) identify and be able to access crisis resources, and additional sources of support.

Here’s what I know...We’re showing up. We’re doing amazing things. AND behind the scenes we’re struggling with a lot of the same things. In my counseling work with individuals and consulting with universities, corporations and community organizations I found myself teaching the same basic skills and it became clear to me that these are fundamental skills we all need to thrive in the intense and demanding work we do. And so THE BASICS was born so I could make this information available to YOU!

This online learning community is the "care package" I'm sending to Black ChangeMakers. This is my plea to US to shift from success narratives that aren’t serving us. This is my call to us to heal and grow together. This is how we create the maximum amount of change.
